OUR BODEGA

At Bodegas LA HORRA, the detailed work we do in the vineyard is extrapolated to the winery. Our wines are the clear reflection of our area, the vintage and the landscape.

What are we looking for?

1.-

Transfer the freshness and complexity of the Ribera del Duero from Burgos to our wines. We don't want that the elaboration process masks the greatness of our area.

2.-

Each of our vineyards ferments separately. Thus it maintains its individuality until the end of the aging. To do this, we adapt the production techniques to the uniqueness of each vineyard.

3.-

Spontaneous fermentations with native yeasts: the yeast population of each vineyard is different and will provide differentiating characters to the wine.

4.-

We adapt the aging times to the characteristics of each vineyard and each vintage. We vary depending on what we determine is optimal for each wine.

5.-

Each wine will be part of the final blend of Corimbo or Corimbo I depending on the age of the vineyard and its peculiarities and organoleptic profile.

6.-

Our wines are the way to discover the landscape of our environment, as well as the characteristics of the vintage.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

The wines from Bodegas LA HORRA are governed by three basic concepts:

  • Avoiding excess wood
  • Avoiding over-ripening -maintaining freshness
  • Carrying out a very careful extraction to favor the fineness of the tannin

The CORIMBO project is based on the respect for the environment and a big effort in Innovation, Research and Development.

An agreement was reached with the brothers Pedro and Pablo Balbás. They are vine growers in the area, linked to the vineyard for generations, with 40 hectares of old and middle-aged vineyards, in the best plots of La Horra and Roa.

The vineyard is cultivated with the utmost respect for the environment, following the lines of organic viticulture. The objective is to make wines that are a faithful reflection of the landscape of the Ribera del Duero from Burgos, adding elegance and freshness to the characteristic strength of the region's "tinta fina".

Bodegas LA HORRA presents a new vision on Ribera del Duero Tempranillo, taking advantage of its knowledge and experience accumulated in so many years of work in La Rioja. In the same way, Bodegas LA HORRA has applied existing synergies in the technical, management, research, R & D & i fields and the commercial distribution of RODA wines and oils. Our ultimate goal is, as our director Agustín Santolaya indicates, "trying to make the Ribera del Duero landscape drink in a more transparent way."

THE PROJECT

Bodegas RODA, after a trajectory of more than 20 years that have made it one of the most prestigious wineries in the D.O.Ca. Rioja, started an investigation through the Spanish territory in search of the best lands for the cultivation of Tempranillo outside of La Rioja.

The region that showed the best aptitude according to the criteria used was Ribera del Duero and, within this D.O., the La Horra area in the province of Burgos. This was the place chosen for, in April 2009, Bodegas LA HORRA was born with CORIMBO and CORIMBO I, wines with character, pleasant and elegant that are located at the top among the Ribera del Duero.

WHY DID WE CHOOSE THE AREA OF LA HORRA?

The area of La Horra was chosen for its old vineyards, for the potential and complexity of its tempranillos, as well as for being a cool area of the D.O., a necessary condition to elaborate the style of wines that we seek. It is an area with a long tradition in the cultivation of the vine that dates back to pre-Roman times and is highly prestigious today.

In Ribera del Duero, the predominant climate is continental, with a considerable thermal jump between day and night. This characteristic translates into highly aromatic, more racial and more structured wines.

We were very aware that we wanted to make wines that stand out for their finesse, maintaining the character of Ribera del Duero.

When we were designing the Ribera del Duero project, we decided to choose the environment of La Horra for its old vineyards, the deep soils where the sands mix with calcic horizons and clay bottoms, and for the cooler climate in the north of the Ribera  del Duero.

In our short experience in Ribera del Duero we are convinced that the choice has been the right one. La Horra and its surroundings form the heart of the Ribera del Duero in Burgos, an area where the Tinta del País reaches the expression we were looking for: race, life and finesse at the same time, as well as aging capacity.
